Thursday 8/27:
Brian and I were going to do another Flatiron climb. We were looking at doing Free for All to Southside; which would get us up on the Pullman Car - the true second Flatiron summit. I put an invite out for others to join us, so Thom and Lindsay joined on as well. This was going to be Lindsay's first multi-pitch climb.
We started hiking around 3:15pm. We found a good place to start, which was a little off from the Free for All route; but it allowed us to do more climbing. Our route was more interesting than the Free for All route (which we could see from our route.) We hooked up with the Free for All route, and found a lot of poison ivy in one of the gullies.
We started the Southside route around 5pm. Thom and Lindsay did a traverse around a ledge, while Brian and I went over a few ledges and traversed around a bit higher. It looked like Thom's line was likely better; but ours was fun too. Both lines went, and we did the climb up onto the Pullman Car, and was on the summit around 7pm. We let Thom and Lindsay rappel from the summit. Brian then downclimbed on belay; and I downclimbed and cleaned the route.
I hadn't done the downclimb off the second in a long time; and it was interesting. Several places where you couldn't see your holds. There were good ones, you just couldn't see them. A lesson in trust... We were all on the ground around 7:30pm, and hiked back down to the cars; arriving just before dark. A great day on the Flatirons!
Hope you enjoy the pics!
