Saturday 7/18:
Met up with a group that climbs on the weekends, run by Julius. This was my first time joining them. Turns out it was a small group this week, with only three people going. We headed up to Jurassic Park, a climbing area near Estes Park. I took the motorcycle up, and thoroughly enjoyed the winding mountain road up to the climbing area.
Julius, Pete and I did the hike up to the climbing area. There is a relatively steep section that reminded me that I hadn't been carrying a heavy pack up steep slopes enough recently. The climbs were pretty cool. A few of them reminded me of Joshua Tree, with some slabby, friction climbing. Some of the routes are really new, so there was a bit of loose rock. It's a great area for beginners though, with some good lower end sport routes. There are some hard routes too.
We were mostly on 5.8-ish routes. I did follow a 5.10d climb; thanks goes to Julius for leading it. I fell a couple of times until I tied my shoes really tight (I was wearing a pair that are REALLY old that don't edge very well; especially because I usually have them tied relatively loosely. They are super comfortable; I usually don't have to change out of the shoes between climbs. That also means that I can't climb as aggressively with them though.)
Overall, it was a fantastic day. Got a bunch of climbs in, and then took the long way home; riding the motorcycle on the winding Peak to Peak highway to Nederland and then down Boulder Canyon back to Boulder.
Hope you enjoy the pics!
