Tuesday 7/14:
My friend Brian and I met up for an after work climb on the First Flatiron. We started hiking up around 5:30pm, and started climbing around 6pm. Did a little simul-climbing to make the first pitch around 90m. I led the second pitch, up and over a small ridge and up to a small ledge. Had some great views, and a good picture of Brian with the shadows cast by the Flatirons. The third pitch likely could have gotten us to a ridge, but a faulty radio got me to make an anchor at a small perch. Brian led the fourth pitch up onto the ridge, where we were treated to a nice setting sun. We free soloed the rest of the way to the summit; getting there around 9pm. We then rapped off, and were back to the cars before 10pm.
Round trip car to car was less than four and a half hours; which was a little slower than I expected. Still not bad considering we only simul-climbed around 20m of one pitch, and that it was a route neither of us had done before. My rope handling wasn't as efficient as I would have liked, and it took a little time finding anchors for the belay stations. (Many routes on the Flatirons don't protect very well.) No worries though, we made sure we were safe; and enjoyed the evening and views.
Hope you enjoy the pics!
