Saturday 4/11:
What is a Super Slam you ask? It's an annual
hike my friend Paul organizes. It essentially hikes most of the
Boulder Front Range skyline in a day; connecting all of the major peaks.
It's a great hike. We had 11 people this year;
Dave B, Dave C, Theresa, Paul, Joe, Terry, Matt, Tom, Synthia, Samantha
and I. We started the hike around 7:20am, and finished up around
7pm. There was a decent amount of snow up high for the first few
peaks; but everyone was really experienced (you would have to be to go
this distance and gain) so there weren't any issues. The day felt
like we were moving, but weren't really rushed. We stopped for
lunch on Green Mountain; and had short breaks on every summit and some
other spots. Stopped and chatted with some other groups, and
essentially had a great time. Here's some notes on the path, and
the time we hit each point.
Starting from Chautauqua around 7:20am taking the Mesa Trail to Shadow
Canyon trail.
Up Shadow Canyon to the saddle between South Boulder and Bear Peak
around 9:45am.
Up South Boulder Peak, it was pretty snowy and icy. Summit around
10:10am.
Back down to saddle, then over to Bear Peak. Still pretty icy and snowy.
Summit around 10:45am.
Down West Ridge into Bear Canyon, then up Green Mountain.
Lunch on Green Mountain around 12:30pm.
Down Green Mountain and up Flagstaff. Summit around 2:15pm.
Side detour to Overlook and Flagstaff Amphitheater around 2:30pm.
Down Flagstaff Trail to connector trail to Ebin G Fine park.
Filled up on water.
Up Red Rocks trail, climbed to summit of Red Rocks around 3:45pm.
Down saddle and up to Anenome Summit around 4:30pm. Thunderclap on
ascent of Anemone.
Local clouds look like rain, but not electrical.
Anemone has an easy shortcut to Sanitas, but private property through
Sunshine Canyon so we went around.
Down Anemone, up Sanitas trail to Sanitas Summit around 5:45pm.
Down into Sanitas valley, then down Dakota Ridge, to Mapleton.
Mapleton to 5th, over to Justice center at 6th and Canyon; back around
7pm.
Total trip was over 26 miles and 10K gain; in under 12 hours.
We then went out and ate at an all you can eat Indian restaurant. Great food and wonderful company; all in all, an incredible day.
Hope you enjoy the pics!
A.J.
