Monday 1/12:
Ever have one of those days when nothing goes right? The past week had been that way. Wasn't initially planning on going with Paul today as I had a work project that should have been done Friday. Things weren't working as they were supposed to; so I worked the weekend on it. Still didn't have it fixed; but decided I needed a break. Thankfully, Paul let me jump on his trip last minute. The change of scenery was definitely very welcomed.
This was going to be a full moon ski or snowshoe. It had been pretty warm recently, but the past two days had been snow in the mountains so I was hopeful that the snow would be deep enough. It was fairly clear down in Boulder, but got cloudier as we headed up the canyon. When we got to the trailhead, it was pretty much whiteout conditions with constant 10mph winds, with gusts around 20. Didn't have to worry too much about not having enough snow...
There were seven of us; some I knew pretty well, some I had met before, and a couple new folks. It was a great time. Shortly into the trip, the tracks on the trail were completely gone, so we were breaking trail. We took a detour to a "haunted" cabin, and then headed up to the lake. At the lake, the snow was really coming down and the winds were whipping. (Check out the 20090112D1-98 picture; do you think it gets windy there?) We backed off down into the trees a little, and shared snacks and hot drinks. Good times.
We then started back down. Due to the snow and the winds, our tracks were gone for most of the way back too; so we got to break trail again. Everyone was experienced, and did great. Didn't get to see much of the moon; but it was a fun night out with a great bunch of people.
